Editor’s picks: American Express credit cards

Best for luxury travel perks: The Platinum Card® from American Express

  • Best features: One of the best travel credit cards on the market, the Platinum Card offers a bevy of luxury travel benefits, including airport lounge access, a statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, an Uber cash credit, up to a $199 CLEAR® Plus annual credit for your membership and no foreign transaction fees (see rates and fees).
  • Biggest drawbacks: That laundry list of premium travel benefits come with a $695 annual fee, not waived the first year.
  • Alternative: The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has a smaller annual fee of $395 and has luxury perks including lounge access. Learn more about the Capital One Venture X vs. Amex Platinum Card.
  • Bottom line: With its first-rate travel perks, The Platinum Card from American Express offers an excellent value for frequent travelers.

Best for dining rewards: American Express® Gold Card

  • Best features: The American Express Gold Card has superb rewards for dining, shopping and traveling. Available in white gold in addition to rose gold and regular gold, it earns 4X points at restaurants (on up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1x) and 4X points at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1X). Furthermore, it earns 3X points on flights booked directly with airlines or through amextravel.com, making it a well-rounded card.
  • Biggest drawbacks: There’s a $325 annual fee (not waived the first year).
  • Alternative: If your budget can’t handle high fees, you can still earn high rewards if you’re willing to juggle multiple credit cards. The Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card offers 3% cash back for dining and doesn’t charge an annual fee . Pair it with the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express ($0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95), which offers an impressive 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 in purchases per year, then 1%). Both come with even more rewards-earning opportunities, making it a powerful combination to have in your wallet.
  • Bottom line: Frequent travelers will get the most use of its travel benefits and other opportunities, particularly the 4X and 3X earning categories that make it easy to maximize Membership Rewards points to then turn into trips.

Best for no annual fee: Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express

  • Best features: The Blue Cash Everyday is the mini-me of the Blue Cash Preferred, with excellent cash back on groceries and when filling up your car, but with no annual fee. Earn 3% back at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. gas stations and on U.S. online retail purchases on up to $6,000 in purchases per year in each category (then 1%), perfect for the growing family.
  • Biggest drawbacks: The spending cap may be easily topped by families with big grocery budgets.
  • Alternative: Depending on how much you spend, the Blue Cash Preferred from American Express might offer more bang for your buck, despite the $95 annual fee ($0 intro annual fee for the first year). For more information, take a look at when a credit card with an annual fee is worth it.
  • Bottom line: Large families stand to do very well in these featured rewards categories. Plus, the 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months (18.74%-29.74% Variable APR thereafter) is attractive to those who want to make a large purchase or pay off some debt and carry the balance for a bit.

Best for high cash back rates: Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

  • Best features: We love this card’s generous cash back rates. Earn 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 in purchases per year, then 1%); 6% cash back on select U.S. streaming subscriptions and 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations and on transit. It also offers 1% cash back on general purchases.
  • Biggest drawbacks: The 6% bonus at U.S. supermarkets is great, though it’s capped to $6,000 in purchases per year and 1% thereafter. There is a $95 annual fee ($0 intro annual fee for the first year).
  • Alternative: If you don’t get the most value from grocery shopping, the Citi Custom Cash® Card lets you decide how you want to earn high rewards, offering 5% cash back on up to $500 spent each billing cycle in your top eligible spending category, then 1%. Learn more about the Citi Custom Cash Card vs. American Express Blue Cash Preferred.
  • Bottom line: The Blue Cash Preferred card offers a high cash back rate on categories that will appeal to big families on the go.

Best for small business travel: American Express® Business Gold Card

  • Best features: This card offers a decent value to small business owners who stand to earn 100,000 points after spending $15,000 on eligible purchases in the first three months of card membership. That’s in addition to potential bonus rewards in your top two eligible categories each billing cycle such as gas and travel.
  • Biggest drawbacks: There is an annual fee of $375, and if your spending doesn’t align with the bonus categories, you’ll get little value out of this card. Plus, depending on what you decide to do with your rewards, you may lose out on some value. While there are several ways you can use your points, redeeming for travel is consistently the most valuable route.
  • Alternative: Instead of earning 4X points in two eligible business categories each month, the Capital One Spark Miles for Business is a flat-rate credit card that offers an unlimited 2X miles per dollar on every purchase, giving you more freedom to earn rewards on your everyday purchases.
  • Bottom line: Small-business owners who hope to rack up points to put towards travel will appreciate the flexible bonus rewards, lack of foreign transaction fee (see rates and fees), and other travel perks associated with the American Express® Business Gold Card.

Read our American Express® Business Gold Card review or jump back to this card’s offer details.

Best for luxury business travel perks: The Business Platinum Card® from American Express

  • Best features: With a whopper of an introductory offer and excellent travel benefits, the Business Platinum Card from American Express is a solid card for high-spending business owners on the go. Earn up to 150,000 points after spending $20,000 on eligible purchases in the first three months of membership. When booking through Amextravel.com, cardholders earn 2X points per dollar on eligible travel and a 35% bonus on points redeemed through Amextravel.com with your selected qualifying airline (up to 1,000,000 points per calendar year).
  • Biggest drawbacks: The high annual fee of $695 may scare away some business owners.
  • Alternative: The American Express® Business Gold Card might be a better fit for small-business travelers who don’t need all the luxury bells and whistles and who prefer a card with a smaller annual fee. Read more about the Amex Business Gold vs. Amex Business Platinum.
  • Bottom line: Small-business owners may balk at the high annual fee and the high spend requirement to satisfy the introductory offer, but high-budget, travel-happy businesses fit this card well.

Read our The Business Platinum Card® from American Express review or jump back to this card’s offer details.

Best for Delta-loyal small business owners: Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card

  • Best features: You can earn a credit of up to $200 for future Delta flights after spending $10,000 in a calendar year. Earn two miles per dollar on eligible direct Delta purchases, at restaurants and on U.S. purchases for advertising in select media and U.S. shipping purchases (on up to $50,000 in eligible purchases per category, per year), plus one mile per dollar on all other eligible purchases.
  • Biggest drawbacks: Compared to general-purpose travel cards, the redemption options are not as flexible. And if your business doesn’t fly Delta regularly, the welcome offer and travel perks will be lost on you.
  • Alternative: For greater flexibility, American Express® Business Gold Card is for small-business owners who aren’t loyal to just one airline.
  • Bottom line: The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card is a low-cost travel card best for small businesses located in or around a Delta hub city or people who like Delta as their preferred airline and who frequently spend in categories such as dining, shipping, and advertising.

Read our Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card review or jump back to this card’s offer details.

Best for Hilton hotel stays: Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card

  • Best features: Cardholders earn 12X points for spending at participating hotels and resorts within the Hilton Portfolio; 6X points on eligible purchases at U.S. restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations; and 3X points on all other eligible purchases.
  • Biggest drawbacks: There’s a big annual spend requirement ($15,000) to earn a free night reward.
  • Alternative: It’s hard to beat all the Hilton perks you’ll get with the Surpass card, but if you aren’t tied to only one hotel brand, you may get better value out of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. Points are worth more when you book through Chase Ultimate Rewards and have greater flexibility.
  • Bottom line: The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card is ideal for the traveler who frequents the Hilton brand. Hilton loyalists can take advantage of elite status and Hilton’s expansive network of hotels and resorts around the world.

  • Biggest drawbacks: There’s a $350 annual fee, and free lounge access isn’t one of this card’s perks.
  • Alternative: Busy travelers who want more flexibility in how they travel and earn rewards should check out the Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. It doesn’t come with all the exclusive Delta perks, but for $95 per year and offers 3 points per $1 dollar on the first $150,000 spent in combined travel and select business categories each year.
  • Bottom line: Business owners who want to enjoy elite status and who frequently fly Delta will find a lot of value in this card’s wide range of travel perks.

Best for cash back rewards for business: The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card

  • Best features: With no annual fee, you can quickly rack up cash back for your business with this card. You’ll earn 2% cash back on all eligible purchases on up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1%.
  • Biggest drawbacks: The spending cap on 2% earnings will be a disappointment to businesses who can easily spend more than $50,000 per year.
  • Alternative: The Blue Business Plus Credit Card from American Express has a more complicated rewards program that can provide more value to small-business owners who want to maximize the amount of rewards they earn.
  • Bottom line: Start-ups and small businesses will appreciate the simplicity that this flat-rate rewards card offers.

Best for travelers who want elite status: Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card

  • Best features: Receive $2,500 Medallion® Qualification Dollars each Medallion Qualification Year and get closer to Status with MQD Headstart. Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card members get 15% off when using miles to book Award Travel on Delta flights through delta.com and the Fly Delta app. Discount not applicable to partner-operated flights or to taxes and fees.
  • Biggest drawbacks: A $350 annual fee and no free lounge access.
  • Alternative: For a lower annual fee, the American Express Gold Card won’t get you elite status with Delta. But it offers more flexibility and its own sets of features and benefits that may be more appealing.
  • Bottom line: Frequent travelers and Delta loyalists will be delighted by the long list of travel perks, such as an annual companion certificate, discounts on inflight purchases, priority boarding and more.

Read our Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card review.

Best for airline miles: Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

  • Best features: In addition to Delta, travelers have its large network of airline partners to choose from. Best of all, miles don’t expire.
  • Biggest drawbacks: This card doesn’t come with lounge access and won’t help you earn Delta’s elite status.
  • Alternative: The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card carries a slightly smaller $95 annual fee and provides better flexibility for people who are not loyal to Delta. The 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel along with 2 miles per dollar on all other purchases will be a better fit for people who tend to spend a lot in areas that typically only earn 1 mile per dollar with other cards.
  • Bottom line: If you are a frequent traveler of Delta airlines, this card is a great option as you earn 2X miles on Delta purchases, at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets.

Best for business rewards with no annual fee: The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express

  • Best features: For small business owners, this is one of the best credit cards with no annual fee, thanks to its solid rewards and flexible financing features. Cardholders earn 2X points per dollar on everyday business purchases, up to $50,000 per year; and 1X point thereafter.
  • Biggest drawbacks: The spending cap will disappoint businesses with large expenses over $50,000.
  • Alternative: If you’re fine with redeeming your rewards for statement credits, the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card is a better fit for small-business owners looking for a simple way to earn rewards. Learn more about the American Express Blue Business® Plus vs. Blue Business Cash™.
  • Bottom line: Frequent business travelers will appreciate the flexibility and features that come with The Blue Business Plus Credit Card from American Express.

Best for everyday travel: American Express Green Card

  • Best features: Its expanded travel category makes it a great fit for commuters who use public transportation and rideshare services frequently. Additionally, it earns high rates for certain dining purchases.
  • Biggest drawbacks: The American Express Green Card has a $150 annual fee that may be hard to offset if you don’t fly frequently and use the CLEAR Plus and LoungeBuddy credits.
  • Alternatives: The Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card, which comes with no annual fee, may be a better option for frequent commuters since it’s extremely low-cost.
  • Bottom line: The Amex Green Card is a solid option if you fly and commute often, as long as you take advantage of the LoungeBuddy and CLEAR Plus membership credits and redeem points for travel.

What is an American Express credit card?

Seen as a gold standard in card services, American Express is both an issuer and a network. That means it issues cards and services them through its own network of merchants. American Express is known for excellent benefits, including no foreign transaction fees in the case of many cards and 2.7% in others (which is lower than many other cards).

But Amex is more than just a card issuer. In fact, it is tied with Chase for having the highest purchase volume of all credit card issuers in the U.S.

Services offered by American Express

  • Credit cards. Amex is perhaps best known for its luxury rewards credit cards, which offer premium benefits in exchange for a sometimes sizable annual fee. However, it does offer a few of the best cash back credit cards for everyday spending. With exclusive partnerships with Hilton and Delta, Amex also offers cards that reward mightily for loyalty.
  • Business cards. With a full suite of cards that cater to the business owner, Amex offers products that reward handsomely for business purchases.
  • Savings accounts. While not well known for this offering, Amex’s savings accounts are worth a look with interest rates well above competitors.
  • Personal loans. For the qualifying member, you can get a personal loan with well under 10% APR.

How to choose an American Express credit card

American Express’ catalog of options provide a variety of ways to earn and reap benefits while using your card. With several strong rewards cards, there are specific spenders who best fit Amex’s offers.

Who should get an Amex credit card

Travelers. When you want to earn hotel and airline points, American Express has some of the best travel rewards on the market. Amex travel cards offer lucrative rewards rates and high-end travel benefits. Guests frequenting Marriott, Hilton and Delta have lots of opportunity, plus, using American Express Travel to book trips with your card or redeem points for travel can come with bonus rewards and extra value.

Foodies. No matter where you get your meals, American Express has some of the best credit cards for food purchases. From the Blue Cash Preferred to the Gold and Platinum cards, cardmembers can find industry-leading rewards rates at U.S. supermarkets as well as top-notch rewards rates at restaurants.

Business owners. When you need a small-business credit card, Amex has you covered. Some come with no annual fee, while The Business Platinum Card carries a $695 annual price tag; some are built for simple cash back, others are for chasing travel points and loyalty status with airlines; some earn high-dollar welcome bonuses after spending a large amount, some are designed for a startup on a budget. No matter the case, your business could likely benefit from an Amex card.

Who should skip Amex credit cards?

Credit builders. If your credit history is less than stellar, it’s unlikely you’ll be approved for an American Express card. Amex cards come loaded with excellent member perks and typically require a FICO credit score in the range of 670 to 850. Those with credit scores outside this range would be better served by a card that allows them to build credit before moving up to an Amex.

Debt holders. Like some other financial institutions, Amex doesn’t offer balance transfers on its credit cards. So if you carry a lot of debt on other credit cards, check out balance transfer credit cards. Making interest-free payments for a limited time could help you save a lot of money.

Overseas spenders. When you travel abroad or make online purchases with foreign merchants, it’s helpful to have a credit card that is widely accepted and charges no foreign transaction fees. American Express has a large presence around the world, but it doesn’t match the global acceptance of Visa or Mastercard. Plus, most Amex credit cards charge a foreign transaction fee. (The ones that don’t will come with an annual fee or are a Hilton or Delta co-branded credit card.)

What programs does American Express offer?

Many American Express credit cards feature competitive base rewards programs and lucrative welcome offers. They also offer a number of valuable benefits that can prove useful when shopping or traveling. These benefits, which are not exclusive to Amex’s premium products, can include:

  • Extended warranty: When you make a purchase with your card, a one-year warranty is added to the original U.S. manufacturer’s warranty up to five years and for a maximum of $10,000. You can’t exceed $50,000 in a calendar year.
  • Purchase protection: When you make a purchase on your card, your purchases can be protected up to 90 days if stolen or accidentally damaged. It’s limited to $1,000 per item and $50,000 per cardmember per calendar year. With some premium cards, such as Platinum Card, the limit is $10,000 per item for up to $50,000 per calendar year.
  • Return protection: If a merchant won’t take back an eligible item within 90 days, Amex might reimburse you for the full amount minus shipping and handling for up to $300 per item and up to $1,000 per calendar year.
  • Shop small: A way to support both small businesses and their cardholders, this program is offered by many Amex cards to give you a chance at earning a bit of cash back when spending at select local merchants.
  • Transfer partners: If you want to get the biggest bang for your buck, transferring your miles to one of the many American Express airline partners is usually your best bet. Compare American Express transfer partners with our full guide and valuations.
  • Baggage insurance plan: A travel and business card benefit, this plan varies according to the corresponding card and the state you are in.
  • Car rental loss and damage insurance: Unlike some of the best Chase credit cards, this insurance is secondary, meaning it kicks in after other insurance, such as your personal insurance.
  • Global Assist® Hotline: Global Assist is available to all U.S. cardmembers and helps to prepare for your trip with customs information and destination guides. When you are more than 100 miles from home, benefits can include lost passport replacement assistance and translation services. There is also Premium Global Assist for superior products.
  • Statement credits: Depending on your card, you may have a few extra ways to save some money. The right Amex card will grant you statement credits to put towards travel purchases like Global Entry or TSA PreCheck and to help with paying for food through Uber Eats.
  • Travel insurance: This benefit varies by card. The most premium cards offer trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance. Check out our guide to American Express travel insurance for card-by-card comparisons.
  • Lounge access: No matter what type of traveler you are, American Express has some of the best credit cards for airport lounge access. This includes the Green card’s budget-friendly LoungeBuddy credit and the Platinum card’s premium access to five lounge networks (good for more than 1,400 lounges in over 140 countries). American Express also offers several flexible payment options on certain personal and business cards. These options can include:

  • Pay It, Plan It®: This feature, available on select personal cards, allows eligible cardholders to pay small purchase amounts (less than $100) right away through the American Express app. Alternatively, it lets them split up larger purchases (over $100) into monthly payments with a fixed fee. • Pay Over Time: This feature, available on select personal and business cards, lets eligible cardholders carry a balance on eligible purchases, with interest.

  • Expanded Buying Power: This feature allows eligible business cardholders to spend over your credit limit (terms apply).

How we picked the best American Express credit cards

Methodology: We analyzed American Express’ suite of cards to identify its top products in popular credit card categories. Core criteria we considered in our analysis include:

  • Base rewards program: Does the card’s base rewards program offer a competitive return on spending for its card category (cash back, travel, business, etc.)?
  • Additional benefits: Does the card include applicable American Express services or benefits, like purchase protection, return protection, and an extended warranty for everyday spending cards, or baggage insurance, lounge access, or trip cancellation insurance for travel credit cards?
  • Welcome offer: Welcome offers let new cardholders earn extra rewards if they spend a certain amount of money in a specified time period, usually their first three months. They’re a short-term incentive, but often quite lucrative, and can tip the scales when cards offer similar base rewards and benefits. As such, we factored welcome offers in our analysis of the best American Express cards.
  • Annual fee: Does the card carry an annual fee? Given many Amex cards do, we assessed whether that fee could be offset by the card’s rewards program, welcome offer and any additional benefits. In other words, we considered the card’s potential value.
  • Annual percentage rates (APR) and/or flexible financing options: Where applicable, are the card’s APRs comparable to the average APR in its card category? Similarly, do cardholders have access to Amex’s flexible financing features? Note: It’s best practice to pay balances off in full on rewards credit cards so you don’t lose points, miles or cashback to interest.
