On Feb. 24, 2020, Chase officially shut down its mobile wallet app, Chase Pay. But the service won’t be going away entirely.
Instead, Chase is shifting the focus of Chase Pay to integration with online retailers and merchant apps. Though the Chase Pay app has been phased out, Chase cardholders can still be take advantage of the payment method with any merchant displaying the Chase Pay logo at checkout.
“We’ve learned a lot more about consumers and merchants in the last three years and are applying that to our firm-wide strategy. We see our biggest opportunity in working with merchants to make it even easier for consumers to make purchases at merchants’ websites and their apps,” said Eric Connolly, Head of Chase Pay, in a 2019 statement about the shift. “We’re in a unique position to help each merchant – many of them who use Chase for processing purchases – make the payments experience work best for their customers.”
It is clear that this change is dedicated to providing a wider portfolio of Chase Pay functionality to both Chase cardholders and merchants. Soon, Chase will be adding Grubhub and more than 60,000 merchants in the Big Commerce network to Chase Pay functionality, according to the statement.
Some credits have expired, but eGift Card balances survived
Sadly, any Chase Pay credits from ordering ahead that you didn’t use prior to Feb. 24, 2020 have expired. Any stored loyalty card information was also deleted.
However, all remaining eGift Card balances were credited to your Chase Ultimate Rewards account, and you’ll need to visit the Ultimate Rewards portal for future gift card redemptions. You can also find your digital receipts in the Chase Mobile app.

Though the app is gone, the service seems to be growing
Despite the Chase Pay app’s dissolution, it seems Chase is dedicated to making the service more useful for its cardholders. By integrating the payment method with more online retailers and building functionality directly into checkout, eligible Chase cardholders can enjoy more streamlined online shopping. You can also still pay at the pump when you choose Chase Pay as your payment method in the Shell, My Phillips 66, My Conoco, My 76 and Gulf Pay apps.
For now, the list of participating retailers for Chase Pay payments is relatively limited, so a renewed interest in expanding offerings can actually benefit those who use the platform in the long run.
