Premium rewards credit cards often offer a wide range of benefits. From travel credit to lounge access to high rewards rates, there are many perks that make these cards attractive to a consumer.

However, there are also benefits that don’t get as much attention – but can save a cardholder a lot of money and stress.

Purchase protection is one of these benefits. It provides you with coverage in case an item you’ve purchased with an eligible Chase card is stolen, damaged or lost. Read on to learn how Chase purchase protection works and when you can use it.

Purchase protection

Chase offers purchase protection on all of its credit cards. This benefit provides coverage for an item purchased with a Chase card if the item is stolen or accidentally damaged within 120 days from the date of purchase. The issuer can reimburse you, send you a replacement or offer you a repair, depending on the benefit administrator’s decision.

Note that purchase insurance is secondary coverage and only kicks in when your primary insurance, such as homeowner’s insurance, has been exhausted.

As you can see from the table below, Chase can reimburse you for up to either $500 or $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account, depending on which card you have.

How to file a purchase protection claim

To file a claim, call 1-888-320-9961 or file online. Chase requires you to start the filing process within 90 days of the loss, damage or theft. Additionally, if your item has been stolen, you need to file a police report within 48 hours.

Once you contact Chase, the benefit administrator will send you a claim form that you’ll need to complete and submit along with any supporting documentation within 120 days of the loss.

Return protection

If you’d like to return an item but the store won’t take it back, you’re in luck if you’ve paid for it with your Chase Sapphire Reserve or United Club Infinite Card.

These two Chase cards are the only cards by the issuer that offer return protection. This benefit covers items within 90 days of purchase – up to $500 per item and $1,000 per year.

Before filing a claim, make sure your item is covered. You can find exclusions from the coverage in your card’s terms and conditions. For instance, Chase’s return protection doesn’t apply to medical equipment, jewelry and seasonal items such as holiday décor.

How to file a return protection claim

You can file a claim within 90 days of purchase online or by calling 1-800-874-7702. After you contact Chase, the benefit administrator will send you a claim form. Submit the completed form with supporting documentation within 30 days after initiating the process.

Note that if you’re filing a claim within 30 days of purchase, Chase may require that you submit proof of the store’s return policy. You’ll also need to return the item in like-new or good working condition to the benefit administrator.

Extended warranty coverage

If an item you’ve bought with a Chase card has a warranty of three years or less, it may be eligible for extended warranty coverage. Chase’s extended warranty increases the original manufacturer’s warranty by one year, up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account.

The majority of Chase consumer credit cards come with this benefit, as well as all business cards.

How to file an extended warranty claim

File a claim by calling 1-800-874-7702 or at cardbenefitservices.com. You must start the filing process within 90 days of the product’s failure and submit a completed claim form and supporting documentation within 120 days.

Once the benefit administrator reviews and verifies your claim, you will either get the item repaired or receive a replacement.

What is not covered in Chase purchase protection?

Purchase protection is a perk of being a cardholder with Chase, but it’s important to know the terms and conditions that apply before expecting reimbursement. Chase doesn’t offer a comprehensive list of all exclusions but provides some examples of purchases that wouldn’t qualify for purchase protection.

Items that aren’t covered include:

  • Items that “mysteriously disappear with no evidence of a wrongful act”
  • Used or pre-owned items
  • Antiques and collectible items
  • Boats, automobiles, aircraft and any other motorized vehicles
  • Computer software
  • Items purchased for resale, professional or commercial use

It’s also important to keep in mind that items that are eligible for purchase protection are subject to both time and cost caps. Chase purchase protection applies to lost or damaged items within 120 days of purchase. Depending on which Chase card you have, you can make a claim of $500 to $10,000 per claim, up to a maximum of $50,000 total in a year.

Bottom line

Chase credit cards are known for their abundance of desirable perks and benefits. While purchase protection might not get as much attention as other Chase benefits, it’s a valuable benefit that can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Keep this in mind next time you’re planning a large purchase – your Chase card might be just the right choice for it.
