Food delivery perks on luxury travel cards

Save on your next order in with these card benefits

Summary

Benefits for food delivery are becoming more popular on luxury travel credit cards, and if you dine out or order in often, these dining perks could very well tip the scales in favor of one card over another.

Good news for luxury travel cardholders – food delivery perks have become more popular recently. To keep up with the industry trends, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® has added DoorDash to its bundle of benefits, and premium American Express credit cards started offering Uber Eats perks. Before running out and opening up a card, however, it’s a good idea to examine the different dine-in and delivery benefits available with comparable credit cards.

Chase Sapphire Reserve: DashPass

Now, Sapphire Reserve cardholders can get a free (minimum one-year) DashPass membership from DoorDash (activate by 3/31/22), which can be a lifesaver for times when you don’t feel like cooking or dining out.

DashPass offers several advantages, including unlimited deliveries with no delivery fee on qualifying purchases. Since DoorDash charges up to a $5.99 fee per delivery, this benefit alone is worth getting excited about. Reserve cardholders also enjoy lower service fees.

The DoorDash service area spans across major cities in the U.S. and Canada and delivers from over 300,000 restaurants – including both well-known chains and locally-owned stores to fit all budgets.

American Express Platinum: Uber credits

You know Uber offers rides, but did you know Uber also delivers food? The Platinum Card® from American Express offers monthly Uber credits that can also be applied to its delivery service, Uber Eats.

Here’s how it works: Amex Platinum cardholders are offered up to $200 in Uber credits annually, and those credits are doled out throughout the year. You get $15 credited each month, plus an extra $20 in December.

Cardholders can use these credits toward Uber Eats, which is available in more than 500 cities in the U.S. Plus, Uber Eats has a handy app for both Android and iPhone that makes ordering even easier. Note that Uber Eats deliveries charge a service fee, which can add up, depending on the order.

American Express Gold: Restaurant credit

American Express® Gold Card members can also earn credits toward meal deliveries. These cardholders are eligible to earn up to $10 in statement credits each month when they use their card at Grubhub and Seamless, two popular food delivery services (enrollment required). Statement credits may also be used at popular restaurants, such as The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and some participating Shake Shack locations. The credit is also applicable towards orders from Boxed, an online bulk grocery store.

Grubhub is one of the longest standing food delivery services in the U.S. and covers over 100,000 takeout restaurants in 2,700 cities. Seamless is part of Grubhub, offering a smaller service area with over 2,000 restaurants.

Recently, Amex added another attractive benefit to the card: up to $120 per year in Uber Cash doled out in $10 monthly increments (unused credits won’t roll over in the next month). Uber Cash can be used on U.S. rides or orders from restaurants using Uber Eats. The American Express Gold Card must be added to the Uber app to receive the Uber Cash benefit.

Gold cardholders earn 4 points per dollar on restaurants including takeout and delivery in the U.S.

Which luxury travel credit card should you choose?

While deciding on the best credit card for your needs probably goes beyond the dining delivery perks, it’s always good to know the full value of each card (aside from rewards and fees) before making your decision. And if you dine out or order in often, these dining perks could very well tip the scales in favor of one card over another.

In the end, it’s a toss-up between the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the American Express Platinum when it comes to getting the most value. Both cards offer statement credits for using their featured meal delivery service and subscriptions that waive delivery fees, as well as offer valuable rewards on dining, including takeout and delivery. To choose the right card for you, compare other benefits they offer, as well as redemption options and transfer partners.
